Certification

The EFTA certifies mental health professionals to become Certified Equine Facilitated Therapists (CEFTs). We only certify licensed mental health professionals with a Master's level or higher degree in a mental health field of study. This guarantees that EFTA certified practitioners provide the highest quality of equine facilitated therapy possible and that clients can be assured that their EFTA therapist is adequately trained and educated.

Why seek certification?

Clinicians seek certification for many reasons. One goal of certification is to meet the requirements of most licensed professionals to demonstrate competency in their field of practice. EFTA is considered formalized education in the specialized field of equine facilitated therapy.

Certification also communicates to your clients that you are trained and competent in the specialty of equine facilitated therapy. It demonstrates that you are serious about your profession and your career. Certification through the EFTA provides you with the education and training you need to become a certified equine facilitated therapist (CEFT), a designation you can proudly display at your practice site. Finally, certification through the EFTA provides you with contacts to mental health professionals like yourself who are actually using EFT in their practice. You can contact us with questions at any time and receive timely, personalized guidance for using EFT in your practice.

Why seek certification through the EFTA?

The primary purpose of the EFTA is to protect the public by promoting the practice of EFT by licensed mental health professionals only and promoting its competent and ethical practice. We accomplish these goals by offering credentialing programs as a CEFT only to licensed mental health professionals. Certification through the EFTA assures the public and your clients that you have passed our rigorous screening standards for performing EFT and that you are legitimately licensed to practice psychotherapy.

What are the qualifications for EFTA certification?

The foremost consideration for certification by EFTA is that you have a current, active license as a mental health professional in the state in which you reside and practice. This is one of the factors which make certification with EFTA different from other organizations. Since we only certify licensed mental health professionals to practice EFT, our certification tells your clients that you are properly trained, licensed and qualified work with mental health issues using horses.

What would disqualify someone for EFTA certification?

EFTA certification can be refused or revoked for any applicant who is not licensed to practice mental health therapy in their state or who loses their license to practice. EFTA certification will not be granted to a mental health professional whose license: has lapsed, has been revoked, is under investigation or is restricted in any way. A certificate can also be revoked or refused if an application refuses to provide requested documentation.
